Pregnancy Q & A
What is pregnancy care?
Pregnancy care or prenatal care with Dr. Foong includes evaluation and medical treatment as needed for you and your baby. Attending routine prenatal visits significantly reduces your risk of pregnancy complications. Pregnancy monitoring can also detect medical problems for you or your little one before they become serious.
Which obstetrics services are available?
Some of the many obstetrics services available at the office of Nicolai Foong, M.D., include:
- Pre-pregnancy care
- Family planning
- Prenatal care
- Labor and delivery
- Epidurals for a pain-free labor
- OB/GYN ultrasound exams
- Amniocentesis
- Postpartum care
- Vaginal deliveries
- Caesarian sections
- Vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC)
- Preconception fetal sex selection
Preconception fetal sex selection is the process of getting to pick your baby’s gender before undergoing in vitro fertilization (IVF) or other types of assisted reproductive technology (ART). Dr. Foong lets you know what to expect during this process.
What happens during pregnancy care visits?
During prenatal visits with Dr. Foong, providers check your weight and blood pressure. They may have you leave a urine sample for lab analysis. Dr. Foong reviews your medical history and asks about your lifestyle habits, medications, and symptoms you may have.
He completes a physical exam, including a pelvic examination in many cases. Depending on how far along you are in your pregnancy, Dr. Foong may recommend you complete a blood test, measure your abdomen, have you undergo an ultrasound, or listen to your baby’s heartbeat.
He often suggests taking a prenatal vitamin supplement, calculates your due date, and answers questions or concerns you have throughout your pregnancy.
How often should I schedule prenatal appointments?
Schedule a prenatal appointment at the first sign of pregnancy and every month initially (more often if you’re a high-risk pregnancy patient). Your pregnancy is usually classified as high-risk if you’re over age 35, you have a history of pregnancy complications, you’re carrying multiple fetuses, or you have a medical condition.
As you near your due date, schedule prenatal appointments twice monthly and eventually once a week. Call Dr. Foong if you notice any new or unusual symptoms.
